Lattice Packing of Crystalline Solids :

• In the { lattice packing } of { crystalline solids } , the tightest packing patterns are :
  • the { Hexagonal close-packed } pattern ,
  • the { Cubic close-packed } pattern , ( or [ face-centered cubic ] ) .

  

• In the { Cubic closed-packed } pattern , the { 12 neighboring atoms } then exhibits the same structural pattern as the [ SOW-14 ] :

  

• The [ SOW-14 ] structural pattern is therefore a common everyday occurance .
